Shifra slumped to her knees a bit dizzy and stared in
disbelief. “You are the destroyer of
man, the mother of tomorrow, but you have lost your way.” whispered the woman
that stood in front of her. The woman’s body
shook as tears fell from her eyes while she forced the words out. Shifra’s head swam as she tried to register
what was happening. She looked from the
woman’s mouth to the lab coat she wore and noted the fact that it was peppered
in a spray of red. Is that blood? Shifra thought to herself. That’s
not supposed to be there. She then
noticed the woman’s hands, the right one in particular. It held a scalpel and they both were painted
with a thick red; a red that matched the odd sprinkling across the woman’s
white cotton coat. Shifra struggled to
focus on what the woman was saying but for some reason the words were
muffled. She just could not make out
what was being said no matter how hard she tried.
As dizziness swallowed Shifra she turned her eyes away from
the woman and to the floor where she knelt. It was then she saw her own lab
coat was splattered with the exact same red.
Shifra’s hands were clutched to her stomach where a faucet of thick red
syrup flowed out and splashed on the white tiled floor below. It is
blood. It is my blood. Why is it my
blood? Shifra thought to herself.
Still the events of the past few moments had not yet sunk in. When she
looked back in confusion at the woman that stood before her she saw her mouth
the words “I’m sorry”. A moment or maybe an eternity after she spoke those
words the side of the woman’s head burst out in volcanic spray of yet another
brilliant red. Shifra watched, in what
seemed like slow motion, as the woman that stood before her fell lifelessly to
the floor. She clearly heard the clang
of the scalpel the woman had held hit the floor and bounce along the tile. As the sound echoed in her head the last clear
thought Shifra managed to have was how pretty the woman had looked in white; soon
after a thick and inky darkness consumed her.
Little annoying beeps kept going off. Beep, a long pause. Beep, another long pause. Finally it seemed to have stopped. Beep. Shifra opened her eyes agitated at the sound
and when she did so a brilliant white light spilled into her head. She winced in shock, tightening every muscle
in her body. That was the worst thing she could have done at that moment
because a searing fire of pain rocked her body originating from her
stomach. She gasped for air and
panicked. Her eyes could not focus on
anything and she was confused. Soon she
heard voices and felt hands on her body calming her, trying to sooth her. She stopped her struggle when a soft warmth
crept across her skin like a blanket. The incredible pain she felt moments
before slipped away and she floated off once again into quiet blackness.
Beep. There was that
annoying beep again. Beep. Shifra waited patiently. Beep.
This time she did not open her eyes and even though she kept them shut
the burning sensation in her stomach was slowly returning. She focused with all her might and slowly
opened her eyes slowly, peeling back the darkness, once again allowing the
light to pour in. Only this time the light was not blinding. It was a soft yellow glow; almost a honey or
amber shade of gold. Her eyes did not
burn but her stomach and other parts of her body did. When she finally was able to focus she saw
she was lying in bed in a small room. It
didn’t take long for her to realize it was a hospital room. Beep.
She shifted her head to the left and saw where that annoying sound was
coming from. It was a monitor of some
sort and the lines that ran from it went straight to her. As the fog in her head cleared she became
more aware of her surroundings. It was
at this moment she also became aware of the fact that she was not alone.
Shifra turned her head to the right and there in a chair sat
the most beautiful woman Shifra had ever laid eyes on. They stared at one another in silence for
what seemed like an eternity. Finally
the woman spoke. “Welcome back
Shifra. You gave us quite a scare there
for a moment.” Shifra said nothing and
just stared at the woman, noting her dark hair and olive skin. It was a creamy brown, similar to her own,
but somehow, it glowed with just the right kiss of golden sun. “I must apologize for before. I am sure the brightness of the room did not
help you when you woke up the first time.
You have to forgive the folks here. They are all pretty new at this”
said the lady with a smile that made Shifra want to feel how soft those perfect
pink lips really were. They again sat in
silence for a few moments. Finally the
woman stood up and started to walk away talking to Shifra like they were old
friends. “I tell you what I am sure you
need time to gather your thoughts. A lot
has happened since you where last on your feet. I will be back later and we can
chat some more.” As the woman walked out
of the room Shifra watched in silence noting how the clothes she wore clung to
every perfect curve on her body. When
the door closed behind the mysterious woman Shifra shook the image of her form
her head and focused on the room itself.
She wondered, with a bit of fear, where she was and if she would ever be
leaving.
The next few hours were uneventful. At first Shifra had thought of possibly
getting up and walking out but she realized quickly that she barely had the
strength to sit up. She sat there trying
to recall the last things she remembered in her head. She remembered talking to her assistant Rama
and then the rest was a blur. Slowly she
pieced together what had happened. Rama
had stabbed her. But why? Shifra thought to herself.
Why would she do such a
thing? We had known each other for so
long. Tears fell from Shifra’s eyes
as she replayed the events. What was it she said to me? Shifra
grasped at the words that the woman with the scalpel said. “You are the destroyer of man, the mother of
tomorrow, but you have lost your way.”
When she finally remembered them they rang loud and clear through her
head and she sobbed uncontrollably knowing what they meant. As she sat there in the bed crying there was
a small knock at the door. It opened and
a pair of almond shaped dark brown eyes peeked in and asked if she was doing
ok. Shifra laughed in spite of it all with
a bit of snot running from her nose.
“Define ok?” she said. The girl at the door then walked in. She could not have been older than 15 Shifra
thought as she watched her move across the room toward her. “Your gonna be ok.” the girl said as she
grabbed a box off the table next to Shifra.
Shifra watched as the girl offered the box toward her. Shifra gratefully took a few tissues. The girl then smiled and said “You must be
important they don’t just give anyone tissue” she said with smile that made everything
seem just a bit more bearable.
A few days had passed and Shifra slowly regained her
strength. She never saw anyone save for
the young girl who attended to her, whose name was Pria, and a cranky old
doctor who stopped by every now and then to check in on her stitches and
chart. Pria said that the doctor was
just on the defensive because she was well aware of Shifra’s own extensive
medical and scientific background. Pria
was very pleasant and very smart. No matter how often Shifra tried to steer the
light conversations they shared between one another toward gaining information
about where she was, Pria managed to avoid revealing anything. She even once pointed it out that she knew
what Shifra was attempting. It did not
make her mad at all. As a matter of fact
she told Shifra that if she were in her position she would try the same
thing. Shifra could not help but to grow
found of young Pria.
Soon a few weeks had passed and Shifra was up and walking,
with Pria’s help of course. Shifra was
becoming a bit stir crazy. She had been
buying time knowing that it would serve her well to be healthier before she
could do anything about her situation, especially trying to escape if it came
to that. She had finally had
enough. She wanted information. She wanted to know where she was and she
wanted to know if she was free to leave.
One morning she was already up and dressed before Pria had even
arrived. When the door opened Shifra
pushed past Pria and walked out into the long narrow hall she had been down a
dozen times before. She felt a little
guilty as Pria trailed behind asking her what she was doing, practically
begging her to stop. The guilt faded and
Shifra’s determination grew. She was
going to figure out what the hell was going on and where the hell she was. When Shifra got to the end of the hall
instead of taking the known path to the cafeteria and library on the right she
went left. This caused a very loud
objection from Pria. “Please Shifra
don’t go in there. Please wait. It’s not
time.” Pria pleaded with her to no
avail. Shifra stopped for a moment and
turned to Pria. “If you are worried
about getting into trouble don’t. I will tell them it was me. You just go back to wherever you are supposed
to be and pretend you are busy.” Pria just
shook her head and stood there unsure of what to do. Shifra looked at Pria and shook her
head. “Fine have your way. I have had
enough” Shifra said and with that she bolted through the only door that was at
the end of the hall.
Shifra could not believe her eyes.
She stood in the room with her mouth open and
in shock. She was surrounded by
something she thought she would never again see in her life; Men. Not just one or two but at least over thirty
maybe even forty of them. Shifra had
heard stories of Legacy Farms and breeding houses but she had never been in
one. This one seemed so much cleaner
than what she had imagined. There were
just as many women too. They all sat at
various tables and stared back at her. The silence was deafening. Pria stood behind her not saying a word. Soon the silence was broken by a single
voice. “Well I see someone has finally
decided to join us.” Shifra turned her
head in the direction of the statement and found the dark haired olive skinned
woman from the very first day staring at her.
Again she was caught off guard by her beauty and she stood
speechless. Pria spoke up from behind
her. “I tried to stop her but she
wouldn’t listen to me.” “It’s ok Pria”.
The woman stated simply. “We knew this
day would come eventually.” She walked
slowly up to Shifra. Her body swayed
with an elegance that ran from her curves and dripped to the floor. The woman placed hand on Shifra’s shoulder
and with her other hand she made a long sweeping motion that included the all
the people in the cafeteria. “Shifra
Shamir, Destroyer of Man, welcome to Arcadia.”
To be continued...
Has the Destroyer of Man finally met her match? Will she finally pay for her atrocious crimes? Soon we will see what is in store for Shifra and the world she is responsible for creating.
